Is the train the trainer course available to home care providers too?

The Train the Trainer course is available to qualified Allied Health Professionals and Nurses so that they can train and support care home staff to use the Action Falls programme. The course has been designed and tested for use in care homes. We are looking to extend and adapt the programme to people receiving care in their own homes in the future. If you are interested in falls prevention in Homecare please register your interest at Actionfalls@nottingham.ac.uk.

I am a care home manager but not a registered nurse is the course suitable for me?

At present the course is only open to the following criteria, qualified Allied Health and Social Care Professionals and those overseeing a broader remit, including Allied Health Professionals, Registered Nurses employed by a care home. We are looking to design resources and training for care home managers and trainers who fall outside the existing criteria. If you are interested in this work, please contact Actionfalls@nottingham.ac.uk

Is the Action Falls checklist available on a digital version?

The Action Falls checklist is now available to Cura Systems customers. Please note training is still essential to use the system. We are currently in contact with digital care records suppliers, and this is a priority for us to embed the checklist onto digital record systems. Please ask you digital care provider for access to the Action Falls Checklist on your system.

What is the difference between React to Falls and Action Falls?

React to Falls is a general, falls prevention training resource for care home staff. These resources come in the form of a website including training videos, falls prevention guides and an information giving app.

Action Falls is a programme of falls prevention training, support and resources which centres around the Action falls checklist. The Action falls checklist is a multifactorial falls risk assessment which identifies falls risks and provides evidence-based actions to help to prevent falls in individual residents. The react to falls resources can be used alongside Action Falls.

The Action Falls programme has been tested in a successful FinCH research clinical trial.

What is GtACH and FinCH?

Guide to Action for Care Homes (GtACH), was the original name for the Action Falls programme. The name was changed from GtACH to Action Falls as Care Homes felt it was easier to relate to and more practical for everyday use.

FinCH relates to the Falls in Care Home study (FinCH Implementation National Study), which relates to the testing of the Action Falls/GtACH programme.

How do I access the materials from the course?

Electronic materials are available to download after you have completed the course. This includes the Action Falls manual, the Action Falls checklist and your certificate for completing the course. Materials are available to you to download for up to six months from completing the course. After this time physical materials will be available to purchase from the Action Falls team.

I work in a small team, how many “train the trainers” can I train once completing the course?

The course is designed to train Allied Health Professionals and Nurses to deliver the Action Falls programme to staff working in the care homes. Only people signed onto the Action Falls online ‘train the trainer’ course will receive the certificate of completion and receive the CPD points. The University of Nottingham would not endorse anyone who has not completed the train the trainer course to deliver the training in care homes.

How often does the training need to be done?

The Action Falls Train the Trainer training should be repeated every 3 years.

Can the care home manager become the trainer once they have completed my training so they can support the new staff or would I need to come back and train the new staff?

No, the Train the Trainer course is for designed for qualified Allied Health Professionals and Nurses to train and support care home staff to use the Action Falls programme, you would be required to train and support the staff.

Do you recommend the care home staff use both the Action Falls checklist and their own system in place, should they say they cannot replace their current process with the Action Falls process?

The Action Falls programme is based on research evidence; therefore, it should be used to replace the care home’s previous process. Where care homes use digital care home records, they should ask their digital care software providers for the Action Falls checklist to be added to their platform. Where previous systems cannot be replaced, Action Falls can be used alongside their current falls assessment, but there is a risk that this will duplicate falls recording.

Could you please send me a printed copy of the manual for care homes and the action falls lead manual?

Once you have completed the training, you will be able to access the manuals and the checklist.
