Research
The Action Falls Programme is backed by over two decades of research and has been evaluated in three separate clinical studies. Scroll to see more information about our current research and related projects. Alternatively, you can see our publications by clicking the button below.
Current Research
Our latest Action Falls research is the HERON project. In this study we are adapting Action Falls for use in home care in coastal and rural communities.
You can find more information on our dedicated HERON study page or contact Dr Katie Robinson or Dr Fran Hallam-Bowles.
Related research and projects
The principles behind Action Falls can apply to preventing falls in other areas. Find out more about our adaptations of the Action Falls programme for different settings and users.
Post-Falls Management
Dr Fran Hallam-Bowles and Dr Katie Robinson are working with health and care professionals and residents to develop consistent, national principles for post-falls management that can be used across care home and health and social care organisations.
The project is being completed in partnership with the University of Nottingham, East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Avery Healthcare Group. We are also collaborating with Care England.
The project follows on from Action Falls, led by the University of Nottingham.

Action Falls Lead e-Training Evaluation (AFLeTE) Study
In this study, we have interviewed people who have completed our falls lead e-learning. We wanted to understand how our new e-learning training is helping them to support the implementation of the Action Falls programme into local care homes. This work has now been completed and we are in the process of sharing and publishing our findings.
For more information about the study, please contact Dr Joanne Ablewhite or Dr Janet Darby
Action Falls for Adults with Learning Disability
Current Work
The tool is not yet available as it is still in development. We are just about to start the final stage of the development of the tool in October 2024. This will involve a small number of clinicians, adults with a learning disability and carers trying out the tool and letting us know what they think. We hope to have this all done by March 2025. The feedback we get on the tool will help us to decide what we need to do next and whether the tool can be shared or whether more work on it is needed.
If you have any study queries, please contact: joy.agbonmwandolor@nhs.net or visit the Action Falls for Adults with Learning Disabilities website
Co-production of an Implementation Model for Falls Management in Care Homes (CHAFFINCH)
Dr Fran Hallam-Bowles used action research to complete 18 workshops with 16 stakeholders to develop a shared learning model to help support the implementation of Action Falls.
Key themes relating to implementing Action Falls included having access to tailored training, involving key people, safe spaces to talk about falls prevention, regular learning, confidence as a key outcome of success, and using mixed methods. These were transformed into three pillars of the shared learning model. These pillars are to make sure residents and relatives receive information about fall prevention, each care home receives a bespoke package of training, and ongoing support.
